Saatchi Gallery's Selfie to Self-Expression With Huawei
The much awaited photography exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery has opened and has become the world’s first to explore the history of the selfie. Scroll down to see what I found inside...
The show is presented by global tech brand Huawei (the world’s largest manufacturer of smart phones). In 2016, Huawei reinvented smartphone photography with the launch of the P9 smartphone featuring a unique dual-lens camera co-engineered with the iconic brand, Leica Camera AG.
Huawei believes in cultural technology: the fusing of technology and culture to deliver solutions to help people express themselves in a new way.
From Selfie to Self-Expression showcases key artworks, many of which feature interactive, digital and user-generated content, by artists as diverse as Christopher Baker, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Juno Calypso, Tracey Emin, Van Gogh, Mohau Modisakeng, Rembrandt, Cindy Sherman, Gavin Turk and Velazquez.
The most exciting part of the exhibition from a fine art point of view is the Young British Photographers, which highlights the emerging role of the smartphone as an artistic medium.
The gallery has commissioned ten exciting Young British Photographers to create new works using Huawei’s newest dual lens smartphones co-engineered with Leica, as part of their artistic practice. Reprising the spirit and energy of the Young British Artist movement first launched 25 years ago.
Do not miss: The work of Alma Haser
Alma Haser’s photography within the Young British Photographers part of the show expands the dimensions of traditional portrait photography, taking her photographs further, using inventive paper-folding techniques to create layers of intrigue around her subjects, manipulating their portraits into futuristic flattened-paper sculptures.
